Maria Ying-May Cheung is a Hong Kong-based artist who primarily engages with photography. Cheung’s artistic practice originates from her inquiries into the retention, preservation, and historical perspectives of everyday life. She is particularly interested in depicting still life and objects, as they connect people with collective memories. She embraces beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and even incomplete, which evidences the erosion of time. Through her works, she aims to interact with the audience, evoking their awareness and appreciation of the changing and gradually disappearing eras in time and history.

In 2022, Maria obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), co-presented by Hong Kong Art School; and received Dean’s List Award and 1a Space Award. She completed her Higher Diploma of Fine Arts (2020) at Hong Kong Art School and was granted the Outstanding Artwork Award and the Academic Performance Award. She was also awarded the Outstanding Performance Scholarship from the Hong Kong Education Bureau. Her photographs were exhibited at the Pao Galleries (2022, 2023), Yrellag Gallery (2022), Fine Art Asia (2021), and The Gallery of Hong Kong Art School (2020).
