With a long history established over a thousand years ago, ink art today faces the western influence, modernization and the introduction of new technologies, keeping up with the changes had become a priority. The ink master Liu Kuo-Sung famously stated that he would like to “revolutionise the centre of the brush”, indicating the importance of learning from the new.

Daguan Gallery is pleased to have invited renowned curator Eric Leung from Hong Kong to lead this exhibition. It is known in the east that water takes no regular shape whilst the ink had five different shades, hence the centre core of ink art is in the ink and water themselves. The exhibition transINK presents the pioneering and unconventional works by ten artists from Hong Kong and Macao.

// 湧浪 ---- 風浪是風推動海面所產生的水波。風浪在海上傳播,遠離其生成區域,成為「湧浪」。過往「湧浪」也曾被稱為「暗湧」。...... 當湧浪進入淺水區時,浪的高度會急劇增加,對身處岸邊或在近岸海面活動的人士構成威脅。 //

The Exhibition title partly inspired by a weather term from Hong Kong Observatory: “Swells”

// Swells - Winds blow over the ocean surface and generate water waves called seas or sea waves. Propagating outward across the oceans, they are referred to as swells when they reach a distance far away from their originating area ……. When swells enter shallow waters, their wave heights would increase drastically, posing threats to people near the shoreline or operating over near-shore waters. //

I am aware of the inarticulate silence within the sediment that lying on the seabed. Occasionally, the energy that driven by wind is liberating the remaining vitality there.

#1 - I intermittently weave my hair into a piece of extended hair. This seemingly insignificant labor required a series of forceless knot to sustain the tension in between. The hair decays and bend into a ball shape. I saw a dark cloud formed there and every bits of water vapor mark the hard work.

#2 - At the moment of reunion for dried clay and water, they briefly sway and then return to calm, empowered by being patient again for the next desiccation.

#3 - Some specimen I made that has been exhibited at the Medical Museum before. I claim they are my prototype of my own plastination technique.

#4 - Straight trunk ; tortuous branch ; chaotic emergency exit.

#5 - In the city of the Mediterranean climate zone, I picked up the fruit of the tree on the road, The fruit was bitter.

About the Artist

Man Mei To (b.1990) obtained her Bachelor degrees in Arts from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (RMIT) and Hong Kong Arts School in 2015, majoring in painting. Her artworks incorporate various media such as painting, photography, video, installation and mixed media.

Man’s artworks typically engage the “ the body ” and “ the city ”. She consciously carries her sensitivity of searching body intimacy to explore the landscape in city ; urbanized life ; fading scenario and vanishing objects around the cityscape. Her works aim at providing awareness on ‘ his ’ existence, and the dialogue between his ’ fragility ' and ‘ his ’ silence by objectifying, cloning, reconstructing and quantifying found objects around. And looking for the weight of these objects once they had from their fragment. She hopes to find a closed relationship between the land and our body through her art practice, until reaching a natural state for both to exist.

Man has initiated her first solo exhibition “Laundry Shop ( A walk with A3 , Hong Kong , 2016). And she has previously participated in Primitive Sense Art festival ( Omachi City, Nagano,Japan 2016 ), Ensemble ( VT Artsalon, Taipei 2017 ), etc.

On Earth” Ceramics Festival

77212048_154815589216962_2683175415383588864_n.jpg

You are cordially invited to join the Opening Ceremony of
On Earth Ceramics Festival 2019
Opening Ceremony: 6/12/2019, 6pm
Exhibition Period: 7/12/2019 – 5/1/2020
Time: 12:00 – 20:00 (Daily)
Venue: L0 & L1 Galleries, JCCAC

“On Earth” Ceramics Festival
The city and the rural are interdependent, the pace of development between them is different and gradually the communication in between becomes deficient and alienated. Rachel Cheung, the curator of “On Earth” Ceramics Festival, employs ceramics as the main medium and invites artists to encounter with the nature, to create artworks that share their ideas and expectation toward the city and the rural, in order to foster the importance of balance and coexistence between “city and rural” and “nature and modernization”.

Ceramic art and education are becoming more and more popular in Hong Kong. It may be a good timing now to present this event as a ceramics festival so as to reflect the current situation of the diversified development of ceramic art. In this festival, artists are invited to explore the “people”, “land”, “resources” and “urban-rural” in nowadays’ Hong Kong from a multi-angle perspective. It also hopes to promote the concept of rural sustainability and urban-rural coexistence through art to linkage different communities. This festival is a good opportunity to unite the ceramic practitioners in Hong Kong and to positioning and stimulate the development of contemporary ceramic art. *

“On Earth” Ceramics Festival is the themed exhibition of JCCAC’s annual art festival, which is co-presented by Unit Gallery and JCCAC, and curated by Rachel Cheung, the founder of the Unit Gallery. Under the Festival, there are three exhibitions: On Earth Contemporary Ceramics Exhibition, Exhibition of Lai Chi Wo Art Project, and Artists’ Studio Open cum Exhibition. There are also fringe activities: art talks, art demonstrations, workshop and exhibition guided tours.

**Heartfelt thanks to the JCCAC, the Policy for Sustainability Lab of the Centre for Civil Society and Governance at The University of Hong Kong (the “Co-creation of the Community” Scheme under the “HSBC Rural Sustainability” Programme) and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council for their generous supports.

【Intimacy in the Distance │ Hong Kong Art School Alumni Network Exhibition 2019】

The ceramic exhibition Intimacy in the Distance │ Hong Kong Art School Alumni Network Exhibition 2019 is co-presented by Hong Kong Arts Centre and Hong Kong Art School Alumni Network. In the 20 years since it was founded, the Hong Kong Art School, a division of the Hong Kong Arts Centre has witnessed the graduation of more than 200 students who were ceramics major, more than a hundred of them have set up their work studios to continue with their art making. They are the new blood of the local ceramics landscape. Thirty-six ceramics artists from different backgrounds and cohorts have been invited to take part in this exhibition. The 118 pieces of exhibits were divided into three sections, focusing on functional objects, art creation and earlier works. The broad spectrum of works presents various perspectives to look at the world. These creative works of art highlight Hong Kong Art School’s steadfast support for ceramics as a professional practice, and our efforts to nurture students who are keen to pursue studious study and innovative attempts at creation.

The word She_borg is a term coined by Christy Chow, derived from the term cyborg(cybernetic organism), referring to the mixture of organism and electronic machines. In popular culture, male cyborg is dominant over the feminine . When we think of the word ‘Cyborg’, we are more likely thinking of the masculine and powerful male characters in movies such as the Justice League or Terminator. Even though we might often see female cyborgs such as Scarlett Johannsson in Ghost in the Shell, their images often imitate that of the masculine figures with a sexual twist. Cyborg representations are often alienated from our daily life. However, in reality, cybernetic enhancements have already penetrated our everyday life. In this solo exhibition, Christy Chow focuses on women's cybernetic transformation, using multimedia media to express the new ethics on the female body in an age of artificial intelligence.

(Hey! Big South!)
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Lulu NGIE
Relax Until Distraction Comes

12 October – 9 November 2019
Opening: 12 October 2019, 4 - 7 pm

Gallery EXIT is pleased to announce "Relax until distraction comes", a solo exhibition of new works by Lulu NGIE. The exhibition will open on 12 October 2019 and remain on view through 9 November 2019. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, 12 October from 4pm to 7pm.

Comprising both oil and ink paintings, NGIE's latest exhibition reveals a whole universe of emotions. Some of the works explore feelings such as joy and hope, while others deal with the anger and despair the Hong Kong artist felt during the political crisis in her hometown, when injustice and human rights violations left her struggling for inner balance.

NGIE's work revolves almost exclusively around the human figure. Its shape is reduced to the absolute minimum: a few brushstrokes mark the outline of the body. The face is a simple oval, with eyes, nose and hair barely hinted at. There is no mouth – in the space where these figures exist, words are not needed.

Her paintings often show interactions between two or more figures. They reach towards each other; they point; they touch. We see them sitting, walking or dancing together, with entangled limbs that end in delicately drawn hands and feet. Extending from a body that is merely suggested, they are social tools as well as powerful signifiers of emotion.

The stark reduction of the figures is a result of NGIE's longstanding practice of ink painting, an unforgiving medium that forces the artist to consider every brushstroke. In her oil paintings, she uses colour in an equally deliberate way. Only parts of the canvas are filled with barely shaded red, blue, green or yellow. Rather than describing visual appearance, these patches are vehicles for emotion.

The dynamic composition of many paintings suggests that their protagonists are engaged in a process. They constantly reevaluate their place relative to others or look inwards to examine the ebb and flow of their feelings. Emotions arise and fade away, just as relationships evolve and fall apart. By embracing these changes, NGIE's work embraces life itself.

The circumstances in which the figures find themselves are not always easy to decipher. NGIE's works are deeply personal, at times even cryptic. Looking at them can feel like listening in on someone talking to themselves. We may not always understand these solitary conversations, but anyone who has struggled with adversity will find it hard not to be moved by their deep humanity.

The Aura - Exhibition by Alumni of Hong Kong Art School

The presence of the original is the prerequisite to the concept of authenticity. … It is significant that the existence of the work of art with reference to its aura is never entirely separated from its ritual function.” — Walter Benjamin, 1935

The medium of painting may sometimes evoke sense of nostalgia, however, the evolution of painting works and the many exciting forms they have taken on in recent years have led to countless reforming initiatives and forward-looking motives.   Reinterpret the aura of art and the nature of artistic authenticity by juxtaposing Walter Benjamin’s critical theory made almost a century ago and the contemporary artworks freshly created by the graduates from our painting major of our Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art)* programme; and see what you may be able to find out from this unique viewing and visiting experience.

Participating alumni:
Benjamin HAO | Phillip HUI | LAU Yin Yeung | Catherine PICKOP | Ivana PONG| June WONG

Mum said: Ula Fung

An exhibition combining paintings with some diaries.

Mum Said’ is an exhibition combining paintings and diaries with objects from every day life, focusing on a generation of Women that changed their identities from Chinese to Hong Kong (British) between the 1950’s & 1970’s. Within this work I have featured many every day objects from my mother’s stories. The objects might recount memories of stories that my mother told me, my work not only records those stories but it is my way of trying to stand in my mother’s position. My Mother’s stories.

My Mum was one of thousands of Women that fled Mainland China for Hong Kong. My work talks about how society looked at Women during that time. ‘Mum said’ explores the multiple identities that  women had, from when they were Children, the role they played in the family as they grew up, the expectations of them when they were in love, when they got Married, when they became Mothers and the overall limitations that women faced’

Curatorial Statement

From the Art School: Selected Graduate Works

Academic training is the general tendency of contemporary art: most artists active today ─ visual arts, performance arts, music or literature ─ have received formal education in arts, some even have obtained postgraduate degrees. In a world in which knowledge is highly esteemed, it is necessary that contemporary art develop along with the growth of art academies.

The most prominent feature of formal art education is systematic training. This must not be mistaken for spoon-feeding or imitations. Rather, students will be introduced to many diverse theories and methodologies besides their training in artistic skills and techniques, including critical thinking, formal and stylistic experimentations, inter-disciplinary strategies, art history, social studies, professional practices, and so on. English scholar Victor Burgin put forward the concept of 'heuristic' education in 1982, aiming "to provide the student with a wide range of facts, and a number of critical tools, in the interests of developing an informed capacity for independent thought."

Here we showcase three graduate projects by artists who have studied the BAFA programme jointly offered by the Hong Kong Art School and RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. All three alumni have studied photography as their major, but the themes they explore are varied, touching on issues that are social, regional and conceptual. What they have in common is the criticality of their thinking process, and the readiness of their stylistic explorations. For the purpose of showing the uncertainties in life, Polly Chan Kong Yi invites the viewers to take a gamble on what they will see; Cheung Yick Kan has a life-long interest in To Kwa Wan where he is born and grew up, in his photographs he uses the 'window' as his metaphor to talk about the past and the future of the district; finally, Jason Tsui Hok In is showing fewer and fewer uniformed workers in his sequence, and asks us to rethink the meaning of 'going to work'.

The Era of Irrelevance

Hong Kong ceramic artist/illustrator Scott Chan will be hosting the ceramic exhibition - The Era of Irrelevance, to bring the audience down the memory lane to the public estate where he spent his childhood in the '90s. He has also recreated the objects and people that he was once scared of the most, strangely enough, none of these are scary anymore.

In The Era of Irrelevance, the artist combines his signature illustration into ceramic creation, to show people what life was like in the time when everything was quiet but steadily developing. Like many children in the estate, Young Scott didn't need a lot to be happy - a BigMac, a TV game or a collector card would make his day. But on the other hand, it only took one bully to scare the ___ out of him.

The artist reveals and re-visits the demons of his childhood in the exhibition twenty years later, and he discovers that none of these bullies: the bike rider with a jukebox hanging on the back of the bike; the so-called the leader of the gang; or the elder boys who would beat up any kids just for a dollar. None of these are scary anymore, and he is even amused to be able to meet them again, like old friends.

The Era of Irrelevant is dedicated to the fear in the past that have nothing to do with who we are anymore. Scott invites us to face the subjects that bothered us at some point in our lives. As time goes by, we might be able to find a way not to be affected by those fear anymore…perhaps because we may be wiser, stronger and bigger, or we are scared of something much worse now.

Gummy candies are soft, gelatin-based chewable sweets. Gummies has a high water content, are available in a wide variety of flavors, and its shape, size, texture are easily manipulable depending on one’s desire and needs. Due to its high sugar content, gummy candies are very high in energy (a.k.a. calorie).

Yummy Gummy is a special exhibition presented by the Women's Festival, curated by KY Wong. KY lined up 7 local female artists in a critical reflection on the gender moulds and stereotypes we are so often forced into, and the possibilities of resistance. By using the colorful and shape-shifting gummies as the point of entry, their works explore themes such as artificial bodies, beauty, corporeal desire, resistance, fluidity, and flexibility.

場 地 │ kubrick(油蔴地眾坊街3號駿發花園H2地舖)

自由Eyes! Freedom Eyes!

自由Eyes! Freedom Eyes!.jpg

(Paul Yeung)

(Chiv Law)

Ron Yakir
