Ink Asia 2017

Hong Kong Art School @ Ink Asia 2017 (15-17Dec@HKCEC)
Ink Asia, the only international art fair devoted to contemporary ink art, will be held from 15-17 December 2017 at Hall 5B of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. As the first-time exhibitor of this art fair, the School will be showcasing a collection of most exclusive artworks created by our artist-alumni at the Booth C13.
This is an exceptional cross-over among three established artists, who are also alumni of Hong Kong Art School, Ms. Carol Lee Mei Kuen, Ms. Rachel Cheung and Ms. Ivy Ma. The showcase brings together their representational art pieces, which are the result of their unique ways of exploration across different media. All works capture and share a sense of untold rhythm. The paper-based records of time and light by Carol Lee Mei Kuen, the delicate curves created from clay by Rachel Cheung, and the reinterpretation of cinematographic images by Ivy Ma, all of them carry a subdued and sentimental touch.

Ink Asia 2017 Opening Hours (Open to Public)
15 & 16 December 2017 (Fri & Sat) | 11am – 7pm
17 December 2017 (Sun) | 11am – 6pm

Artwork statements from our artist-alumni

  • Carol Lee Mei Kuen
Graduate, Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art)(2002, Painting Major) & Master of Fine Art (2007)
Carol has been incorporating the elements of light and time into her paper-based works since 2005.   She records time and light in a unique way, leaving  dust-like traces and soft silhouettes across the papery surface.    She makes reference to Japanese shoji window for her work to be showcased this time, playfully implying the presence of light.

  • Rachel Cheung
Graduate, Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) (2001, Ceramics Major)
The ceramic works by Rachel are known for their delicate quality and sense of fluidity.  Between the crescent shape and the full circle, the works to be showcased this time again spark the quest for balance.

  • Ivy Ma
Graduate, Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) (2002, Painting Major)
Ivy has started working on her series of cinematographic images since 2011.   On the print-outs featuring still-life images from films, the printing ink is selectively erased, giving rise to layers and textures.  Drawing is also applied to enrich the images.

Deep Silence - HKAS Alumni Network Exhibition 2017

Deep Silence.jpg

Alumni Network

Deep Silence

The 29 artists featured in this exhibition are graduates of the Hong Kong Art School. All of them are practising artists, some have already developed their own style with mature skills while others are new faces to the local art scene. Some of them focus on the examination and study of media and materials. Others attach importance to man’s inner thoughts, which serve as the foundation for their wide range of works.

The exhibition is titled “Deep Silence”. We hope that the audience may look at the artists’ exquisite ways of seeing things and listen to the words deeply embedded in their works, even though the words may sound like a whisper in a world where noises dominate and in a restless age full of anxieties. The participating artists may have different starting points in the world of art and have taken different paths in their art pursuit, but each of them has his/her own perspective and reflection on life and existence. Each has his/her own story to tell.

What makes this exhibition more meaningful is that the participants and organisers are all alumni of the Hong Kong Art School. Part of the gain from the sales of works will also be donated to the School for development use. “Deep Silence” has reunited many who spent their art training years with the Hong Kong Art School. Behind the creativity of the works are the persistence of the artists, the effort of the Hong Kong Art School to fulfil the mission of art education, and the continuous care, strong bond and unfailing support between the alumni.

Dusk Rat Run – A night of back alleys in between the industrial buildings in Kwun Tong

EVENT MAP of Dusk Rat Run

In the unnoticeable gaps between the vast buildings

hide an obscure Kwun Tong

Dusk Rat Run is a one-night flash mob art happening, transforming the maze-liked back alley network in Kwun Tong industrial area into an experimental art platform.  The happening aims to discover the back alleys and explore their potentials and possibilities, which extends to that of other public spaces in Hong Kong.

Up to 30 artists and art groups of diverse media will take part in Dusk Rat Run, of which more than 20 are selected from the Open Call for Creative Projects in the past 2 months. All artworks are dedicated to the happening.  They include installations, performances, sculptures, games and walks, most of them inspired by back alleys and Kwun Tong.

Dust Rat Run will cover more than 20 alleys near Hoi Yuen Road, the main road spans from Kwun Tong MTR station all the way to the pier. Between vast and packed industrial buildings, the interconnected narrow alleys form the possibly largest back-alley network in Hong Kong. Streets in Kwun Tong are immensely crowded during working hours; these alleys become shortcuts to avoid the crowd.

The government has implemented plans to rectify the back alleys of the district. However, like other rear lanes, debris and stains are still everywhere. At the labyrinth of alleys in industrial area, bills, roll-up banners, car tires, pallets together compose a unique urban scene.  At night, after work hours, the alleys become quiet and render another atmosphere.

The back alleys are not as regulated as the main streets. Alleys can be messy, but they are relatively free from control. Unlike the much administered and homogeneous public spaces in Hong Kong, each alley has its distinctive appearance and character. The back alleys as hidden public spaces are unique of Hong Kong. However, they are often disregarded or considered as dangerous and need rectification.

Topics that are not covered in class – addressing what emerging artists may be eager to know

From handling enquiries of potential collectors to liaising with art galleries, this sharing addresses topics that are seldom covered in class but are essential to art graduates. This is a cozy sharing among Hong Kong Art School’s alumni, many of them are now experienced and established artists in the field. Listen to their experiences and bring them your queries in mind, including but not limited to issues like how to face audiences’ responses towards your works during the Graduation Exhibition, how to respond when you are approached by collectors or galleries, and how to draw potential agreements with art dealers etc.

Enjoy a relaxing evening of sharing with light refreshment!

Look forward to seeing you!

Master of Fine Art (2017) - Beyond the Journey

Entitled “Beyond the Journey”, the RMIT Master of Fine Art Graduation Exhibition HK 2017 presents a suite of works by eleven artists from the 2016 /17 RMIT Master of Fine Art program. As a result, the exhibition reveals diversity in creativity and aesthetic experiences, expressed through painting, photography, video, sculpture and installation. These works are born from the joy and demands of art making. They are produced and arranged to facilitate personal interpretation and rumination on our place in the scheme of things.

Ms. Catherine Maudsley
Council Member, Hong Kong Art School

OUR 2017 RESIDENTS WRITE...

I just got some wonderful news and couldn't think of two better people to share my news with: the novel excerpt I read at Taleamor Park has been accepted for publication! Thank you again for believing in my work and for your kindness and support. SA, New York

I cannot thank you enough for having given me the gift of this artist haven in the woods. You have provided all the creature comforts plus your gentle kindness. I will be forever grateful. JCS, New York

You have created a place of magic and I have treasured my time with you. Thank you for your generosity, for sharing the beauty of your lives and for giving me this opportunity to write. ZF, Vermont

These were among the most productive weeks of my life. I’m so grateful for your kindness and generosity. Hope to see you again very soon. ELS, Virginia

I’ve had such a wonderful time here. I only wish my stay was longer! Thank you for everything. I’ve enjoyed our shared meals, tea time, and conversations so much. Thank you for sharing your home and property. It’s been a beautiful place to work and also to rest. LL, Indiana

Thank you for a wonderful stay in Indiana. I’ll remember sunlit afternoons on the patio reading and writing, morning yoga on the deck, taking in the cool air while wandering the cornfields. And also the beach and the great afternoon at the Art Institute. Many good memories and so much productive writing accomplished here. IK, California

First one in, last one out! I enjoyed my visit and will return rested. Thanks for all the wonderful meals and conversations. This month flew by and if there were no residents ahead of me, I think you would have had to kick me out. You two could not have picked a better name for this place. Visiting friends and family is exactly what it felt like. See you again soon. Thanks for everything! TLP, Louisiana

Thank you for an amazing trip—your generosity and kindness knows no bounds. I had a productive, lovely time here and will always remember this time fondly. Thank you for your hospitality and kindness. CJ, Georgia

I’ve never felt so attached to a place and it saddens me greatly to leave… This was my first residency abroad, but I doubt that any future experiences will be as enriching as this one. There was so much to discover here; native plants, weird bugs, herons, tall trees, trails, ponds, etc. Rural Indiana is wild and beautiful. You will definitely see me back here as it already feels like home. You two are beautiful human beings, so full of energy and stories to tell! I will treasure all of our dinners and interesting conversations about life, history, art, and love. I can’t thank you enough for everything. GL, Montreal

Thank you so much for giving me the chance to come to Taleamor Park. I will never forget the experiences—the cockleburs, the trench, the potlucks, the wonderful presentation day, and the bonfire afterward. It’s been lovely to have the chance to get to know your farm and you. I wish you all the best. MA, Oregon

I have found my time here both restorative and productive. I loved running the trails in the changing leaves, sawing down branches with Clifford in the afternoons, and playing the giant dictionary game. Thank you for opening your home and making it a place to create. I will remember the magical bonfire that wasn’t and the s’mores that were, but most of all the kindness. Don’t forget to be good. It can be radical. JS, Louisiana

Thank you very much for the wonderful time I spent at Taleamor Park. I was very inspired by the landscape, nature, and the creative atmosphere here. I also very much enjoyed our conversations. I was glad to have such charming and creative fellow residents. I wish you health and many new great seasons at Taleamor Park! KB, Kyiv

In a sense, there is a strangeness of seeing - a distance is built between the image and our memory. It has grown blurred and somehow the image further transforms from what it used to be in our mind. This series of works explore the possibilities on the associations between photographs and painting. A determination of taking possession can depict a more complete and truthful picture of eternality in art? How to extend spatial image with painting from searching for vanished images in everyday?

Reverie - Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) Graduation Exhibition 2017

Reverie.jpg

The Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) (BAFA) Graduation Exhibition, organized and co-presented by RMIT University and Hong Kong Art School, brings together the works from more than 40 graduating students of the BAFA programme, encompassing creative media of Ceramics, Painting, Photography, Sculpture and Multimedia installation art.

The theme of the exhibition, “Reverie”, describes the transient detachment of the students’ mind from reality, which opens up themselves to unlimited thoughts. When ideas can transverse freely through their minds, thoughts will no longer be bounded by presumed restrictions, leading to an array of ideas and emotions being incorporated into the artworks.

A guided tour and a sharing hosted by the BAFA alumni, which relates the Graduation Exhibition to the ongoing art journey of an art graduate, will be held alongside the exhibition. All are welcome to join.

The theme the curator explores for this year’s exhibition focuses on “the role, the voice, and the responsibility” of the artist in the current troubled times.
